wondering if she belonged to some amateur dramatic society and if so whatever parts they gave her. It seemed to me^ too^ that Dickie was anxious to postpone things^ was wearily trying to hold the lights^ and it was almost with a sigh it seemed to me — we had reached the fresh fruit salad and Pam's soft-centred miniature meringues^ exactly two each — that he leaned forward and for a second placed two fingers on my wrist and said "Cream?"

I say a second not diminutively. A second of hand-touching on open table top at a small dinner party in Rhododendria is long. I said no thanks I didn't like cream very much and passed it on.

My mother said^ "She's never liked it. Not even as a child — nothing to do with her figure. She's just silly."

"I can see/' said Dickie gravely^ "that it's nothing to do with her figure/' and across the table Pauline Dickie sent one of Pam's Royal Doulton cheese plates spinning to the parquet with a crash.

"Oh Pam! Oh Pam/' she cried. "I'm so sorry. Oh I'm such a muggins." Pam looked livid and my mother began to mop about with a napkin — some wine had gone over too and Dickie had patiently risen and edged himself round the narrow space and bent down to try and pick up the bits.

"Oh leave it. I'll do it. It's all my fault." Pauline pushed him so that he tottered.

We had coffee in the sitting-room quickly after
